‘The Paris Review’ To Launch An App – AppNewser
I’m looking forward to the new app from The Paris Review.
From an interview with Truman Capote in Writers at Work: The Paris Review Interviews, edited by Malcolm Cowley, copyright 1958:
Interviewer: Are there devices one can use in improving one’s technique?
Capote: Work is the only device I know of. Writing has laws of perspective, of light and shade, just as painting does, or music. If you are born knowing them, fine. If not, learn them. Then rearrange the rules to suit yourself… .
Words of wisdom found in a discarded library book I bought for 25 cents at a yard sale two summers ago. Apps are new and wonderful and oh so impressive, but Capote just spoke to me from a long-ago interview, published on pages worn from reading and yellowing with age. Somehow it seems to make the message, and the finding of it, even sweeter.
